What is League?

Newer Professors and store staff often are unsure what Pokémon League is – while Pokémon has some great resources to explain how Pokémon League works, such as the Play! Pokémon League Handbook, some of the most commonly asked questions are below.

What is a Pokémon League session?

Pokémon League sessions are times dedicated to Pokémon League activities. These activities can vary depending on League, but can include casual play/trade, learn-to-play sessions, tournaments, and more!

Is Pokémon League a tournament?

Tournaments can definitely take place during Pokémon League sessions, but there is no requirement that a tournament takes place for Pokémon League sessions – indeed, Pokémon’s description for Leagues describes them as “a great way to learn game basics and get the feel for Pokémon competitive play before beginning to compete in Pokémon tournaments”. Any tournaments taking place alongside League sessions do not automatically add players to your League roster, so if you’re running a casual tournament (NOT a Prerelease/Challenge/Cup!) along with League, don’t forget to add the players to your roster!

What *isn’t* Pokémon League?

While Prereleases, League Challenges, and League Cups are linked to Pokémon League locations, and may take place alongside a League session, these do NOT count as Pokémon League activities for reporting purposes. Pokémon takes this very seriously – from the Play! Pokémon League Challenges, Cups, and Prerelease Guide:

Reporting players from Prereleases, League Challenges, and League Cups on your League roster when those players did not participate in any League sessions is considered inaccurate League reporting, which can lead to action being taken on your League, including removal of eligibility for events or removal from the Play! Pokémon program.

Is there an entry fee for Pokémon League sessions?

Based on a survey of League Owners, approximately half of Pokémon Leagues charge for entry and approximately half don’t. Many Leagues that charge for entry provide players with a booster pack for attending and often run a structured tournament as part of the session. Leagues that don’t charge an entry fee are often less structured open play/trade events.
